Rabindranath Tagore and Asia’s First Nobel Prize

You all know that Asia is the largest continent in the world in both area and population. About two‑thirds of the world’s total population lives in Asia. And yet, hundreds of crores of people had to wait 12 years for a single Nobel Prize. You may take pride in knowing that this extraordinary achievement was made by a Bengali. He was Rabindranath Tagore. Many may not know that he was not only the first Nobel laureate from the Indian subcontinent, but also the first from the entire continent of Asia.

So far, 13 people from the Indian subcontinent have received the Nobel Prize. Of these, 5 are of Indian origin but migrated elsewhere. From all of Asia, only 85 people have received Nobel Prizes, while the United States alone has 425. That contrast speaks for itself. No matter how much one criticizes the United States or calls it conspiratorial, at the end of the day their research, innovation, and contributions to human civilization are far greater.

There are only about 15 million Jewish people in the world, yet they have earned around 220 Nobel Prizes. In contrast, among nearly 2 billion Muslims, there are only 13 Nobel Prizes—and Pakistan does not even recognize Abdus Salam as a Muslim because he was an Ahmadi. Among Arab countries, Egypt has 2, and Palestine, Yemen, and Tunisia have 1 each. Oil‑rich countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, and Qatar have produced no Nobel laureates. It is worth reflecting on what their contribution to knowledge and science truly is.

Many people blame Jewish communities for the world’s problems, yet never reflect on their own shortcomings in knowledge, science, or intellectual development. They fail to see how far ahead others have moved. Companies like Google, Facebook, and Dell—many major players in the tech world—were founded or led by Jewish individuals. They are also at the forefront of medical research. Many of the devices that keep people alive today were developed by them. Those who call for boycotting Jewish products usually stop at Coca‑Cola, because if they extended the list further, they would have to give up essential medicines and everyday technologies.

So those who want to criticize others or compete with them should first measure their own depth of knowledge and scientific contribution. They should examine how much they themselves have added to the expansion of knowledge and new research. In today’s world, those who advance in science and knowledge will lead. Others will simply have to follow. There is no alternative. You cannot enjoy the benefits of someone’s invention while simultaneously condemning them or wishing them harm. The fact that they do not boycott you is your good fortune.

When Rabindranath won the Nobel Prize, Kazi Nazrul Islam was only 14 years old. Yet some ignorant clerics spread the claim that Rabindranath won the Nobel by stealing Nazrul’s writings. Many speakers still repeat this in religious sermons. They say it knowingly, because people believe it easily. The boat of delusion does not just float over mountains—it sails right up to the heavens. Nazrul made immense contributions to Bengali literature and to revolutionary thought. But by spreading such false claims, these clerics only disrespect him.

Happy Rabindra Jayanti! 🌸 Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861.

Rabindranath Tagore was not just a poet—he is an eternal beacon of our thought, culture, literature, and humanity. His writings, melodies, philosophy, and message of humanism continue to guide us, inspiring us to think anew and dream anew.

In his own words: “If no one responds to your call, then go your way alone.”

May this spirit give us the strength to move forward. Even if we stand alone, we must carry the torch of science, civilization, and humanity.

May our collective commitment to knowledge and creation enrich us further.

On the birth anniversary of the Poet of the World, heartfelt respect and love.
