Degradation of Women in Islam

Islam has a degrading ḥillāh marriage (real name: taḥlīl) for women!

When we say that Islam has the degrading ḥillāh (actual name: taḥlīl) marriage for women, Islam sees it this way: “Husband, since you divorced your wife out of anger and impulse, now another man will ‘consume’ her, and only after that you may marry her again — what a punishment for you!” The wife is treated as property, not a complete human being!

Now the “mumin brothers” will start twisting things, saying that ḥillāh marriage is haram in Islam, that the Prophet cursed ḥillāh marriage. “Where does Islam say you must do ḥillāh marriage? Show the evidence.” This part is true — according to one sahih hadith, the Prophet did curse ḥillāh marriage, the one that is done as a contract! The problem is with the terminology itself. The mumin brothers’ usual twisting — look at the sahih hadith first — here it is. Anyone reading it will think ḥillāh marriage is haram, that Prophet Muhammad hated and cursed it. But that is a misunderstanding of the issue. If a husband gives three divorces, the wife MUST marry another man, and there MUST be consummation. Only if that husband voluntarily divorces her later can she marry the first husband again. This middle marriage is entirely an Islamic requirement. The Prophet cursed only the contractual version of this middle marriage. Since there is no proper Bengali term for it, people call it ḥillāh marriage, though the real name of the process is taḥlīl. The mumin brothers use this word to twist the argument — “Look, there is no such thing as ḥillāh marriage in Islam.” In the case of one or two divorces there are different options, but after three divorces, without marrying another man, the woman has no way to return to the first husband’s home.

This is a command of the Qur’an — must be followed, no way around it. Sahih hadith says consummation with the middle husband MUST occur.

Mumin brothers, before you show up with your twisted logic to defend Islam, maybe check the matter yourselves first! It’s like this — I say that Prophet Muhammad rode a winged donkey from Umm Hani’s bed to go on the Mi’raj. A mumin brother will immediately say — “Look, the atheist is lying, it was a winged horse.” But they will not accept that the entire story is a borrowed myth from Zoroastrians and the tale of De Viragh. Whether it was a winged donkey, or a horse, or a winged crocodile — does that prove anything about these fairy tales? This is exactly the condition of the mumin brothers of Islam!
