Zamzam well water is regarded as highly sacred and religiously significant in the Muslim world. A common claim about this water is that it contains no germs, contamination, or harmful substances and remains perpetually pure. However, reports from international health authorities and news media indicate that the reality is not that simple. Nor is this water the most drinkable water in the world. Yet, if one says this, many Islamists in Bangladesh would rush to attack them. The fact is that Saudi Arabia purifies Zamzam water using non-Muslim technology before supplying it to the city of Mecca and to pilgrims. There are also records showing that several countries have found contamination in Zamzam water and have imposed restrictions on its sale or distribution.

Those of you who live abroad know that Fiji exports its “Fiji Artesian Water” and France exports its “Evian” water, earning substantial revenue. These two brands are very popular internationally. Suppose these natural source waters were consumed without any treatment at all. In that case, how would Fiji, Evian, and Zamzam rank in terms of suitability for human consumption? Unfortunately for believers in divine miracles, Zamzam would come in third place. The people of the small island nation of Fiji claim that their water is the purest, and they can scientifically demonstrate it. On the other hand, while billions of Muslims claim that Zamzam water is the purest, the Saudi government itself never makes that claim, because they know the actual quality of Zamzam water. After all, they themselves subject it to purification.

Fiji Water – Rating: 9.5/10

The source of this water is a completely confined and protected underground Artesian Aquifer on Fiji’s Viti Levu Island. The water naturally passes through layers of volcanic rock over hundreds of years before accumulating underground. This deep subterranean chamber is entirely protected from outside air, acid rain, and human-made pollution. Before bottling, the water is naturally free of microorganisms and safe for drinking. Its naturally occurring silica gives the water a particularly smooth and pleasant taste.

Evian – Rating: 8.5/10

The source of this water is the natural Cachat Spring in the French Alps. Meltwater from Alpine glaciers naturally filters through layers of sand and rock for approximately 15 years before emerging from the spring. It is also naturally very pure and suitable for direct consumption without treatment.

Because spring water comes into contact with the surface environment, it carries slightly greater environmental risk than a confined underground aquifer such as Fiji’s. In recent years, researchers have detected extremely small traces of pesticide residues in that region of the Alps. However, this pesticide issue is human-induced, as should be obvious.

Zamzam Water – Rating: 7.5/10

This water comes from a historically significant underground well in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. From a religious and spiritual perspective, it is considered by Muslims to be the most blessed and greatest water on Earth. It is entirely natural and naturally alkaline. Zamzam water contains a very high level of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) or mineral content (approximately 750-800 mg/L), which is roughly two to three times higher than ordinary drinking water. It contains elevated levels of sodium, calcium, and nitrate. Although it falls within World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guidelines, it is relatively heavy and somewhat salty in taste when used as an everyday thirst-quenching water.

Food Standards Agency (FSA) Warning in the United Kingdom

The UK government agency Food Standards Agency (FSA) has repeatedly warned citizens, particularly ahead of Ramadan, to avoid bottled water sold under the name “Zamzam.” The agency stated that samples of such water sold in the UK or brought into the country privately were found to contain arsenic levels approximately three times above the legal limit. In an investigative report by the BBC, samples were collected from taps associated with the Zamzam well and from bottles sold in Mecca by pilgrims and tested. The report stated that high levels of nitrate, potentially harmful bacteria, and arsenic concentrations three times above the permitted limit were detected. In other words, contamination similar to that found in illegally sold water was reportedly detected in some samples associated with the original source as well. CBHUK

Not Only the United Kingdom – Restrictions in Other Countries as Well

These concerns were not confined to Britain alone:

• Malaysia: Since 2012, the Ministry of Health has prohibited the commercial sale of Zamzam water because of concerns about counterfeit and adulterated products entering the market. By October of that year, authorities had seized Zamzam water worth approximately RM58,000, and local media reported that contamination had been found in samples from at least three brands tested at a laboratory in Malacca. pressreadermalaymail
• United Arab Emirates (Sharjah): Recently, after a man was caught converting a residential building into an illegal bottling facility and selling ordinary tap water as Zamzam water, Sharjah Municipality prohibited the sale of Zamzam water through commercial outlets. Gulf News

These incidents make it clear that a substantial part of the problem is related to counterfeit bottling and uncontrolled export and distribution—meaning that it is difficult to verify the origin and quality of products sold as “Zamzam” outside Saudi Arabia.

Water Treatment in Mecca Today – This Is True

Today, Zamzam water is treated using modern technology before being distributed in Mecca. Through the King Abdullah Zamzam Water Project (KPZW), launched in 2013, water is transported from the well through underground stainless steel pipelines to a treatment plant in Kudai, where it is purified and sterilized using filtration systems and ultraviolet (UV) light. According to statements from Saudi authorities, advanced sterilization systems using ultraviolet radiation are employed to destroy bacteria and viruses. The water is sent to a dedicated station for filtration, purification, and sterilization, where samples are tested using pH meters, chlorine analyzers, and microscopes to detect microbial contamination. Important Observation: If Zamzam water were naturally and permanently free from all forms of contamination and microorganisms, Saudi Arabia would not need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on filtration, UV sterilization, and routine microbiological testing. The existence of this infrastructure itself suggests that Saudi authorities do not regard the water as “automatically pure” and instead process it according to standard drinking water quality procedures. Before distributing it to the public, they sterilize it and adjust its mineral balance using foreign technology, particularly French technology.

Therefore, the claim that “Zamzam water is pure and can never contain any microorganisms” is not consistent with the available evidence.

So, What Does This Mean?

The available evidence indicates that the simplified claim that Zamzam water is “naturally and unconditionally free from all microorganisms and contamination” does not fully align with reality. Multiple investigations and tests conducted at various times by the UK’s FSA, as well as health authorities in Malaysia and the UAE, identified arsenic, nitrate, or bacterial contamination in certain samples. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia itself has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in advanced filtration and sterilization systems, demonstrating that its authorities consider water quality assurance important rather than relying solely on religious belief.
